One of the proudest milestones in our journey at Ananda's Seva Sadana Trust is the planning and construction of our Biogas Digester. This single infrastructure investment transforms what most see as waste into an extraordinary resource.
The Problem We Are Solving
A single cow produces approximately 10 to 12 kg of dung per day. With our growing herd, that amounts to hundreds of kilograms of organic matter daily. Without proper management, this poses environmental and hygiene challenges. With the right infrastructure, it becomes an asset.
How the Biogas Plant Works
Cow dung mixed with water in a specific ratio is fed into a sealed underground digester tank. Naturally occurring anaerobic bacteria break down the organic matter over 20 to 30 days, producing methane-rich biogas that can be directly used for cooking, and generating slurry that is an excellent liquid fertilizer for our fruit trees.
Our Impact Numbers
- Daily biogas production: Estimated 2 to 3 cubic metres per day once fully operational
- Equivalent to: Replacing 1 to 2 LPG cylinders per month for our kitchen
- Organic fertilizer: 500+ litres of nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer per month for our plantation
- Reduced carbon footprint compared to LPG by over 70%
The Circular Economy Vision
Our long-term vision is a perfectly circular system: the cows graze on grass grown from our compost, their dung powers our kitchen and fertilizes our fruit trees, whose fruits feed our cows, whose milk nourishes our community. This is the ancient Indian model of sustainable living — Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the Earth is one family.
